In a pastoral statement, Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, stressed that true loyalty must be directed toward the country and its democratic principles, rather than to individuals or self-serving interests.
Cardinal Advincula underscored that allegiance should be rooted in truth, justice, and the common good, not in personalities or partisan gain. He warned that misplaced loyalty—whether to powerful figures or narrow interests—undermines national progress and weakens democratic governance.

“Our loyalty must be to the nation, to democracy, and to the principles of justice. It should never be tied to individuals or self-serving interests,” Cardinal Advincula said in his pastoral message.
The statement was issued amid heightened political noise in the country, including controversies over flood control project funds, the reappearance of political figure Zaldy Co, and planned rallies by various groups. Against this backdrop, the Catholic Church reminded the faithful to remain anchored in democratic values and moral responsibility.
The pastoral message forms part of the Church’s broader call for unity, integrity, and accountability in governance and society, as Filipinos face ongoing political challenges.
