The Philippines has once again proven its prowess in the global rice arena, earning a prestigious silver medal at the World’s Best Rice Award held during the World Rice Conference in Phnom Penh. The winning entry? The aromatic NSIC Rc218, affectionately known as “Mabango” and sold locally as Dinorado.

Selected from a competitive pool of 30 entries—including heavyweights from Thailand, India, and Australia—Mabango stood out for its tender texture, rich flavor, and signature fragrance. The double-blind judging panel, led by Chef Robert Nieto (aka Chef Buttercup), praised the grain’s culinary elegance, noting its ability to elevate even the humblest Filipino dishes.

This year’s top prize was shared by Vietnam’s ST25 and Cambodia’s Phka Rumdoul, both celebrated varieties with multiple wins under their belts. Vietnam’s ST25 now boasts three titles, while Cambodia’s entries have claimed the crown seven times.

Developed in 2009 by DA-PhilRice, Rc218 was designed with both farmers and food lovers in mind. Its success marks a significant leap from last year’s third-place finish and signals the Philippines’ growing influence in the premium rice market.

Rowena Sadicon, founder of the Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement (PRISM), emphasized the deeper meaning behind the win: “It’s not just about quality—it’s about identity. We’re showing the world that the Philippines can produce sustainable, export-worthy rice that rivals the best.”

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. hailed the achievement as a testament to Filipino innovation and resilience. “This is proof that our farmers and scientists can compete globally,” he said. “Wouldn’t it be fitting if, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Philippines once again became a rice exporter—continuing a legacy begun decades ago?”

The silver medal is more than a trophy—it’s a fragrant promise of what’s possible. As Mabango continues to charm palates worldwide, the Philippines edges ever closer to reclaiming its place as a rice powerhouse.
