The Department of Tourism (DOT) has issued a stern reminder to accredited tourism establishments not to impose unreasonable price hikes during times of calamity, following reports of overpricing and unfair practices amid recent typhoons.

In a statement released Saturday, the DOT emphasized the importance of maintaining ethical and compassionate business conduct during emergencies. “The DOT reminds all tourism enterprises, particularly those accredited by the department, to uphold responsible, considerate, and transparent business practices during times of calamity or emergency,” the agency said.

The department strongly advised against excessive charges for accommodations, restaurant services, and other tourism-related offerings, warning that such actions undermine the spirit of Filipino hospitality.

DOT also encouraged businesses to adopt flexible booking policies, including cancellations and re-bookings, especially for guests whose travel plans were disrupted by the recent storms.

“It is our shared duty to ensure that travelers, evacuees, and responders find safety, comfort, and dignity in our establishments during times of crisis,” the statement read. “Overpricing or denial of service in these circumstances runs counter to the principles that define the Filipino brand of service that we take pride in.”

The agency assured the public that it is coordinating with relevant government bodies to monitor pricing practices and support tourism workers affected by the calamities.
