President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently met with executives from DL Group, a top South Korean conglomerate, to discuss a strategic partnership aimed at boosting the Philippines’ energy security. The focus: Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)—a new generation of compact nuclear power plants.
DL E&C, the engineering arm of DL Group, is collaborating with Meralco, the Philippines’ largest power distributor, to explore SMR deployment.
SMRs offer clean, reliable, and sustainable energy, with the added benefits of smaller land footprint and faster construction compared to traditional nuclear plants.
The initiative aligns with the government’s push for energy diversification and low-carbon solutions, especially as demand surges and climate goals tighten.
This move could mark a turning point in the country’s energy strategy, potentially reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing grid stability.
