In a move to deepen diplomatic relations, Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, is set to embark on a working visit to the Philippines from October 21 to 23, 2025.
The visit will include a bilateral meeting with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro on October 22, where both leaders will discuss avenues for cooperation and reaffirm their shared commitment to regional peace and prosperity, particularly through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This marks Minister Freitas’ second visit to the Philippines since assuming office in 2023, reflecting the growing momentum in Philippines–Timor-Leste relations. The two countries have maintained formal diplomatic ties since May 20, 2002, the day Timor-Leste regained its independence.
Timor-Leste is home to over 1,500 Filipinos, many of whom contribute to the country’s development in sectors such as education, administration, entrepreneurship, and engineering—underscoring the strong people-to-people connection between the nations.
The visit is expected to pave the way for enhanced collaboration in regional affairs, economic development, and cultural exchange.
