The Department of Energy (DOE) of the Republic of the Philippines has taken a significant step toward strengthening the country’s nuclear safety and security framework, following a pivotal workshop held at the Quest Hotel and Conference Center in Clark, Pampanga.

The event, supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Union (EU) through the IAEA-EU Nuclear Security Project, brought together experts and stakeholders from various government agencies, academic institutions, and civil society to finalize the National Policy and Strategy on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection. The workshop also produced a draft of the national action plans for the proposed National Policy and Strategy on Nuclear Security.

DOE Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, Engr. Gerardo D. Erguiza Jr., emphasized the importance of a “sustainable and risk-informed approach” to nuclear development, while DOE Nuclear Research Division Chief Neil Raymond D. Guillermo highlighted the value of collaborative dialogue in aligning national priorities with global standards.

The workshop featured intensive discussions and expert inputs aimed at ensuring that the Philippines’ nuclear policies are not only technically sound but also socially responsible and internationally compliant.

This initiative marks a milestone in the country’s commitment to safe and secure nuclear energy development, as the Philippines continues to explore nuclear power as part of its long-term energy strategy.
