Vice President Sara Duterte visited Mati City a day after a powerful earthquake struck the region, leaving several casualties and widespread damage. In an interview with local reporters, Duterte expressed deep sympathy for the victims and emphasized the importance of disaster readiness.
“We visited friends and families here in Mati and helped facilitate the transport of the deceased to their respective hometowns,” Duterte said. One of the victims was from Davao City, and the Vice President personally assisted in arranging the transfer for the wake.

Drawing from her own experience during recent tremors in Cebu and Davao, Duterte stressed the importance of maintaining presence of mind during disasters. She reiterated the basic safety protocol: “Duck, cover, and hold,” and urged residents to evacuate to open spaces only when safe.
She also highlighted the need for a “Go Bag” — an emergency kit placed near the door for quick access during evacuation. “Yesterday, I ran out without even my cellphone. I had no towel, no essentials. That’s why a Go Bag is crucial,” she shared.
When asked about the ICC’s rejection of interim release for former President Rodrigo Duterte, the Vice President declined to comment, saying it was more appropriate to focus on the victims of the earthquake. “Let’s empathize with those who lost loved ones,” she said.
She also responded to questions about newly appointed Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, who had expressed interest in reviewing her SALN. “Let him study it properly. I leave it to God whatever he plans to do,” Duterte remarked. She added that if she were president, she would not have appointed Remulla to the post.
Regarding the relief of Colonel Raymond Dante Lachica, Duterte confirmed that her office had already issued a statement. She also postponed commenting on the proposed restoration of the ₱700 million OVP budget, saying, “Money isn’t the priority right now. What matters is easing the fear and grief of our people.”
In closing, Duterte offered a heartfelt message to residents affected by the earthquake in Davao Region, as well as those in Baguio and Cebu. “Let’s not forget what our disaster councils taught us. Keep your Go Bag ready. Stay calm. Stay safe.”
