In the aftermath of the powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on October 10, Bishop Abel Apigo of the Diocese of Mati has ordered the temporary closure of all Catholic churches and schools in the region pending structural safety inspections.
In a circular issued Saturday, Bishop Apigo emphasized that “safety must remain the top priority” following reports of significant damage to religious and educational buildings. Parish priests and school administrators were instructed not to use any facilities until they receive clearance from local authorities confirming the buildings are safe.
While churches remain closed, the bishop encouraged priests to celebrate Masses in alternative, dignified locations, reminding the faithful that the Holy Eucharist is a source of strength during times of crisis. Quoting St. Paul, he urged the community to “persevere in prayer” and remain firm in their faith.
The earthquake claimed at least seven lives, triggered landslides, destroyed homes, and prompted coastal evacuations due to a brief tsunami scare. It followed a deadly 6.9-magnitude quake in Cebu earlier that week, which killed at least 74 people.
Bishop Apigo’s directive reflects a dual commitment to physical safety and spiritual resilience, as the diocese begins its recovery from one of the strongest quakes to hit the region in recent years.
