Digital Pinoys has praised the National Privacy Commission (NPC) for issuing a Cease and Desist Order against World App, a tech firm accused of exploiting Filipinos through deceptive biometric data collection.

Ronald Gustilo, National Campaigner for Digital Pinoys, condemned Tools for Humanity (TFH)—the app’s developer—for allegedly offering cash incentives in exchange for iris scans without transparent data usage disclosures.

“More Filipinos are now protected from this predatory scheme that tricks people into surrendering their biometric data without full knowledge of where it’s going,” Gustilo said.

He urged World App to disclose how the data was used and to destroy all biometric information collected in the Philippines. Gustilo also called for criminal charges against TFH and its local partners, citing possible violations of Sections 25 and 26 of the Data Privacy Act, which carry penalties of up to six years in prison and fines of ₱4 million.

“It’s not their role to decide anyone’s ‘humanness,’” Gustilo added.
