A new chapter in sustainable transport begins this November as the country’s first locally made electric passenger ferry, M/B Dalaray, sets sail along the Pasig River.
Launched Monday, the e-ferry was developed through a collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, the University of the Philippines – Diliman, and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
Powered by electric battery, M/B Dalaray can carry up to 40 passengers and three crew members for up to three hours. It will serve commuters across key cities including Pasig, Makati, Mandaluyong, Taguig, and Manila.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. hailed the vessel as a symbol of Filipino ingenuity and unity. “Ito ay produkto ng pambihirang galing, sipag at pagkakaisa ng mga Pilipino,” he said, emphasizing its role in reducing fossil fuel dependence and cutting carbon emissions.
MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan added that the project will help ease traffic congestion and offer a more comfortable commute. “Malaki ang matutulong nito upang mabawasan ang problema sa trapiko at magbigay ng mas komportableng biyahe para sa mga pasahero,” she said.
The initiative also aims to boost river-based tourism and promote a clean, modern, and future-ready transport system in the Philippines. (PNA)
