In a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations, Japan and the Philippines convened the Vice-Ministerial Strategic Dialogue in Manila on October 2, marking a pivotal moment ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Hiroyuki Namazu, met with Undersecretary for Policy of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega, to discuss a wide range of strategic issues. At the outset, Mr. Namazu extended heartfelt condolences for the victims of the September 30 earthquake in Cebu Island and affirmed Japan’s willingness to provide necessary assistance.

The dialogue focused on enhancing cooperation in economic security, maritime affairs, and regional stability—key pillars in promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). Both sides acknowledged the increasingly complex global strategic landscape and emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration to address emerging challenges.

Discussions also covered pressing regional concerns, including the evolving situations in the East China Sea and South China Sea, as well as trilateral cooperation among Japan, the United States, and the Philippines. The officials reaffirmed their commitment to working closely on ASEAN-related initiatives and broader international issues.

As the two nations prepare to celebrate seven decades of diplomatic partnership in 2026, the dialogue underscored a shared vision for peace, resilience, and mutual prosperity in the region.
