Mayor Benjamin Magalong announced his resignation from the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), effective September 26, citing concerns over the Commission’s perceived independence.

In a statement released Saturday, Magalong emphasized that his decision was made “not to abandon the fight, but to protect the very integrity of the fight.” He denied any conflict of interest between his role as mayor and his position in the ICI, asserting that both were carried out with “the highest standards of integrity in public service.”

“Recent developments have cast doubt on the independence of the Commission,” Magalong said. “Independence is the bedrock of accountability, and without it, our credibility is compromised.”

The mayor, known for his role in high-profile investigations such as the Mamasapano clash and the Ninja Cops probe, reaffirmed his commitment to combating corruption. He warned that every stolen peso represents a deeper loss for the nation—unfinished schools, understocked hospitals, and broken infrastructure.

“We should never allow corrupt political leaders and bureaucrats to steal the future of our children,” he said. “The greatest injustice is that corruption robs the people of their safety and their future.”

Magalong called on Filipinos to remain vigilant and united in the fight for transparency and good governance. “This will be a long fight,” he said, “but the Filipino spirit of resilience and courage is stronger than the forces of corruption.”

He concluded with a rallying message: “The power of the people will always be stronger than the power of the few. The crusade against corruption continues.”
