The Philippine National Police (PNP) has activated comprehensive security protocols across the country in anticipation of possible protest actions in the coming days, following a rally held Thursday morning at the EDSA Shrine in Quezon City.

Around 200 demonstrators from groups including Tindig Pilipinas, Akbayan, and Clergy for Good Governance gathered to demand the creation of an independent commission to investigate alleged irregularities in flood control projects. The rally, which began around 10:14 a.m., was peacefully dispersed shortly after noon, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo confirmed the deployment of a civil disturbance management team and 60 personnel for crowd control at the EDSA Shrine. She emphasized that maximum tolerance will be observed, but reminded protesters to avoid causing public inconvenience.

“We respect and uphold the constitutional right of every Filipino to assemble and express their views,” the NCRPO said in a statement. “At the same time, we remind everyone that these freedoms must be carried out peacefully and responsibly, without endangering public safety or disrupting community life.”

Additional reinforcements were provided by the Eastern Police District (EPD) and Quezon City Police District (QCPD), with 50 personnel each assigned to support operations in the area.

PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured the public that the police force is on full alert and closely monitoring the security situation, particularly in Metro Manila. He said the PNP has established dispersal and crowd management plans, backed by intelligence operations to prevent unrest.

“We have security plans that have been set, and we continuously monitor peace and order,” Nartatez said during a visit to the 911 National Command Center in Manila.

He also dismissed concerns that large-scale demonstrations similar to those in Indonesia and Nepal could erupt in the Philippines. “We are preparing for that,” he said, adding that the PNP is ready to respond to any escalation.

The NCRPO advised the public to remain vigilant, avoid protest areas when possible, and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety and order. Police units remain committed to protecting both demonstrators and the general public, while preventing incidents such as clashes, vandalism, and traffic disruptions. (Source PNA)
