Langkawi, Malaysia — The Philippines is set to take a leading role in advancing regional environmental cooperation as it prepares to chair the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 in 2026, according to Environment Secretary Raphael Lotilla.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment, Lotilla emphasized the urgent need for collective action among ASEAN member-states to tackle climate change, marine plastic pollution, and biodiversity degradation.

In an interview with Bernama Radio, Lotilla described the Philippines as an “enabler” of inclusive, science-driven strategies to address shared environmental challenges. He stressed that regional resilience hinges on unified efforts and that sustainable development must balance ecological protection with economic growth.

Lotilla said the Philippines, alongside fellow archipelagic nations Indonesia and Malaysia, will prioritize safeguarding ASEAN’s marine ecosystems from plastic pollution. He acknowledged that the issue is not only about future waste management but also about addressing the legacy of accumulated plastics.

As incoming chair of ASEAN in 2026, the Philippines will build on Malaysia’s groundwork to strengthen the implementation of regional action plans. Lotilla highlighted the importance of the post-2025 ASEAN Environment Plan, which will guide collaborative efforts in climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.

“We have a duty, not only to our people but also to the global community to preserve biological resources for future generations,” Lotilla said, underscoring the Philippines’ commitment to environmental stewardship on both regional and global fronts. (PNA)
