Days before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Kamanggagawa Partylist Representative Eli San Fernando is sounding the alarm on what it calls “three wasted years” for Filipino workers under the Marcos administration.

“Palpak ang tatlong taon ni PBBM. Wala kang maalalang kahit isang makabuluhang reporma para sa mga manggagawa,” declared Kamanggagawa Rep. Eli San Fernando. “Ni hindi nga nagkaroon ng makabuluhang dialogue sa pagitan ng pangulo at mga labor groups—just empty promises wrapped in PR.”

San Fernando pointed out that under Marcos, the proposed ₱200 legislated wage increase meant to provide relief for workers was killed in Congress. Wages in the provinces remain dismally low, many below the poverty threshold, while contractualization continues to thrive in both public and private sectors.

“Laganap pa rin ang kontraktwalisasyon, lalo na sa tulong ng mga manpower agency. Sa mga probinsya, mas barat pa rin ang sahod. Ang resulta? Dumarami ang working poor at underemployed. Gutom ang milyon-milyon. Anong klaseng ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ ang pinapangarap n’yo kung basic needs pa lang hindi matugunan?”

Recent surveys support this grim picture: 52% of Filipino families still consider themselves poor, while 1 in 5 experienced hunger in just the last three months. San Fernando also slammed the government’s inefficient disaster response during recent typhoons and calamities, calling it “proof of the administration’s incompetence.”

“Siya na lang, at ang mga sipsip sa kanya, ang naniniwala sa ilusyon ng Bagong Pilipinas. Sa totoo lang, pinagtatawanan na ’yan ng mga manggagawa, at mas madalas, ikinagagalit. Kasi paulit-ulit tayong pinapaasa.”

San Fernando highlighted: “Ngayon pa, may lakas ng loob pang sabihin ni Pangulo na ‘Nandito na ang Bagong Pilipinas’? Oo, nandito na nga, pero para lang sa mayayaman: tax cuts para sa malalaking negosyo, proyekto para sa kanyang mga campaign donor, at todo-todong pabor sa iilang makapangyarihan. Para sa mga manggagawa at ordinaryong pamilya? Same old Pilipinas pa rin: sandamukal na buwis, mababang sahod, walang seguridad, at laging isinasantabi.”

With three years left in the Marcos presidency, San Fernando said it’s not too late—but warned that time is running out.
