GABRIELA calls for immediate action in the alarming abduction of Francisco “Eco” Dangla III, 39, and Axielle “Jak” Tiong, 29, on the night of March 24, 2024, in Barangay Polo, San Carlos City, Pangasinan. The two environmental defenders were reportedly intercepted and forcibly taken by unknown assailants, signaling a grave threat to advocacy and human rights in the Philippines.

Eco Dangla, a spokesperson for Bayan Pangasinan, and Jak Tiong, a coordinator for Kabataan Partylist in Pangasinan, have been at the forefront of environmental campaigns in their community. Their efforts against black sand mining and nuclear power plants have been focused in safeguarding the region’s environmental domains. Prior to their abduction, both individuals were unjustly labeled as “terrorists” by state security forces, a baseless accusation that has endangered their lives and freedoms.
GABRIELA stands unwavering in its commitment to human rights and environmental protection. “We will not be silenced by fear. Our resolve is only strengthened by these acts of aggression. We continue to call for the safety and freedom of Eco and Jak, and for the right of all activists to advocate without fear of retribution,” says GABRIELA Secretary-General Clarice Palce.
“The forceful disappearance of Eco and Jak is not only a violation of their individual rights but an assault on the principles of organization and free expression. We demand the immediate surfacing of Dangla and Tiong. The authorities must act swiftly to ensure their safety and hold the perpetrators accountable,” Palce adds.
GABRIELA’s call to action is a reflection of the broader societal need for vigilance and resistance against the oppression of environmental advocates. The abduction of Dangla and Tiong underscores the perilous conditions under which activists operate, battling not only environmental degradation but also the threat of violence and suppression.
Palce emphasizes the critical nature of the situation, “This incident is a reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to challenge exploitative practices and advocate for the environment. Eco and Jak’s activism is crucial to our collective fight for a sustainable future. Their abduction represents a direct challenge to democracy and must be met with strong opposition from all sectors of society.”
In light of this distressing event, GABRIELA urges the public to come together in solidarity to demand justice for Eco Dangla and Jak Tiong. The women’s group demands the government to prioritize the investigation of their abduction, to provide updates to their families and the public, and to ensure such acts of intimidation against environmental defenders cease immediately.
The women’s group also appeals to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts or condition of Dangla and Tiong to come forward. Together, we must hold steadfast in our demand for accountability, justice, and the unwavering defense of our defenders.
